Mars: I Don’t Care If I Never Get Back…

The Red Planet (NASA)

When I saw Cosmic Log’s article on a one-way trip to Mars, a song came to mind:

Just take me out of Earth’s Orbit,
Take me out in a ship,
Give me some robots and preservable snacks,
I don’t care if I never get back,
Lets fly, fly, fly into the heavens,
If we crash-land it’s a shame,
For it’s one, two, three, asteroids, we’re out,
Of the old Earth game.

On a more serious note, I would sign up for a one-way trip to Mars in an instant. It’s the final frontier, the ultimate adventure, and even if I have to give up my life in the process, how can anyone turn down the opportunity to be part of mankind’s largest and most daring leap ever?

If not for Columbus we wouldn’t have America. If not Armstrong we wouldn’t have been to the moon. Sometimes, when the danger is real, you need to jump. No matter how long we wait and no matter how advanced our technology becomes, we wont reach Mars by walking. I say we should do it.

I’d only go if I had a wife that wanted to go with me. The main dissuading factor at that point would be internet latency.

  2. Natan Yellin says:

I just had a discussion with friends about the internet issue today. With some sort of inter-planet CDN you could reduce the latency for most regular internet activity. There's no way of fixing live VOIP and (video)chatting, but you might even be able to get Google and dynamic websites to work. You'd need some sort of intelligent caching system that knew what you were likely to search for so that it could cache results ahead of time…

Of course there's no infrastructure in place (yet) that can offer the high-speed connection between Mars and Earth that you need for this to work. But the problem is solvable.

The solution of course is to run a daily patch against the Internet and just clone the whole thing locally, on Mars.

OT: Fun to see you guys being Internet Hero's today ;-)

I would also pay all the money I've got for the trip. We would have to live totally self-supporting anyway. This could be _the_ all-inclusive holiday for life. If everyone would pay all they've got, this could actually even become a business model. :-D

  4. Yes, count me in. I'd also go.
